A Little About Insurance…and a little more!

Both J. G. Elliott and McBrayer Insurance Centers are under the umbrella of the J. G. Elliott Company which began as the Wakefield Insurance Agency in 1920 in an office in the Bluffs Theatre Building.  It became known as Wakefield & Elliott Inc. when Jack Elliott joined the firm in 1925.  When Jack Elliott bought out Wakefield the name was changed to J. G. Elliott Company and the Agency moved to a spacious new office on the second floor in the Murphy Building at 16th & Broadway.

In 1955 the Murphy Building was demolished to make way for their new department store.  The J. G. Elliott Company then moved to their new office at 23 East 18th Street.

In 1974 the Agency was purchased by Jim and Dorothy Massey son-in-law and daughter of Jack Elliott, who retained the J. G. Elliott Company name.  Due to the growth of the business it was necessary to add to the existing building in 1980.  This facility served our customers well until the early 1990′s.

John and Megan Massey purchased the J. G. Elliott Company from his parents in 1994 and in 1995 construction of a new building at 2525 Circle Drive began.

On April 4, 2000 the J. G. Elliott Company merged with the Platte Valley Financial Services Companies, Inc. of Scottsbluff, a/k/a Platte Valley Companies .  Platte Valley’s financial network of companies currently operates through seven subsidiaries: 1) Platte Valley National Bank–Scottsbluff with six locations in Nebraska; 2) Platte Valley National Bank–Torrington, with two locations in Wyoming; 3) Tri-County Bank–Cheyenne with one location in Wyoming; 4) Platte Valley Mortgage Company with two locations in Nebraska and one in Wyoming; 5) Platte Valley Investment Center, Inc., with one location in both Nebraska and Wyoming; 6) Platte Valley Ag Credit Company–Scottsbluff with two locations in Nebraska and one in Wyoming; in addition to … 7) J. G. Elliott Company’s two locations in Nebraska and two  in Wyoming .

In October of 2002, J. G. Elliott Company moved to a new location at 1111 East 20th Street in Scottsbluff, on the Platte Valley Companies campus.  The newly remodeled former Ace Hardware building is home to both the INSURANCE CENTER and the Platte Valley Company DATA CENTER.  This enables our customers to handle all of their financial business in one convenient area.

Also in 2002, McBrayer merged with J. G. Elliott Company. McBrayer was founded in 1956 by W. R. McBrayer as a real estate and insurance office. McBrayer moved to its current location, 302 W. 21st Ave. in Torrington in 1980. Mike and Donna Vick purchased the agency in 1988 and owned the business until 2002. In 2004, the Wheatland location was established as Platte Valley Insurance Center. The name was changed to McBrayer Insurance Center in April, 2009. The Wheatland location is housed in the CH Brown facility at 20 W. Frontage Road.
